Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival

We can't deny it any longer. The chill is in the air, the sun is setting
earlier, the kids are back at school‹ Fall has arrived. But don¹t despair.
There¹s one more fabulous outdoor event to celebrate. On October 4 and 5,
downtown Bend will come alive with the third annual Bank of the Cascades
Bend Fall Festival, presented by The Bulletin and Norwalk-The Furniture
Idea.

Coordinated by C3 Productions, the Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival
will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Art,
music, food, beverages and contests will welcome the harvest season
properly.

Artists from all over the Northwest will fill the 150 booths of the Karen
Bandy Design Jeweler Artists Promenade, including painters, fiber artists,
wood workers, jewelers, metalworkers and sculptors. This year¹s Juried
Artist Award goes to Don Zylius of Sisters, whose watercolors depict
landscapes and Central Oregon scenes. Awards for Best Booth Display and
Best of Show will also be awarded.

Make sure to see Central Oregon Pumpkin Company¹s Produce Row, where you¹ll
find a fabulous array of décor of the vegetable variety. Fall squashes,
Indian corn, a full assortment of gourds, and pumpkins will brighten the
corner of Wall Street and Minnesota Avenue.
What would a festival

be without competition? Pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins will be on at
the Gregg and Bobbie Strome of John L. Scott Family Harvest Area for the
Pumpkin Painting and Pumpkin Carving contests. The Best Pumpkin Pie
competition gives local bakers of all ages the opportunity to test their
tasty treats against the best in Bend.

The Best Legs in Lederhosen Contest will be held Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
in the Carrera Motors Oktoberfest Celebration Area. Live festival oompah
music presented by The High Fives Fun Time Band will accompany your best
strut, as well as offer musical entertainment throughout the weekend.
The final trio of Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival contests are all
for the birds ‹ the Best Scarecrow, Best Crow Costume, and the Crow Show.
Two-to-three dimensional hanging or freestanding crows of any media,
designed to explore the nature of the dark bird as personal symbol, will
comprise the Crow Show.

Bend¹s annual Fall Festival Scarecrow Competition has been divided into two
categories this year: artistic and traditional. Scarecrows will be displayed
throughout the festival.

Everyone is invited to join in the spirit of the Best Crow Costume contest
by creating crow costumes and joining the Costume Promenade at 5 p.m.
Saturday, in front of the Artists Local 101 booth. Also visit the Artists
Local 101 tent for a mask-making workshop by Debra Fisher Willis, a local
³master² mask maker, on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Raven storytelling will
follow at 3 p.m.

The Carrera Motors Oktoberfest Celebration Area on Oregon Avenue will host
The Grove Garden of Fine Beers and Wines, where festivalgoers of legal age
can quench their thirst with a variety of beverages.
Nearby, in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot, the food court will offer
Oktoberfest classics such as sausage, hot dogs, barbecue, and ribs alongside
more eclectic fare such as sushi, bento, and Greek delights. Kettle corn,
elephant ears, ice cream, homemade cobbler and ‹ of course ‹ caramel apples
will also be on hand to satiate your sweet tooth.

Another beer garden will be located in the City Hall parking lot near the
Clear 101.7 Main Stage, the epicenter of Fall Festival groovin¹. Saturday¹s
musical artists include Curtis Salgado from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Paul Delay from
3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., McKinley from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Rubberneck from 7 to
8:30 p.m. On Sunday catch Marilyn Keller, gospel singer, from noon to 1:30 p.m, Random
Theory from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and Brent Alan and Low Hangin¹ Fruit from 4 to
5:30 p.m.

The Locals Only Stage will serve as venue for Central Oregon¹s local talent.
On Saturday, hear Shannon Ames and John Cardwell¹s originals at 11 a.m. and
Jenny Baker¹s folk tunes at 2 p.m.; Sunday brings Patrick Lombardi¹s
bluegrass at 11 a.m. and Dan Chavers¹ Texas style folk and blues at 12:30

On Oregon Street between the Pine Tavern Restaurant and Wall Street, Fall
Festival visitors will find The Harvesting Clean Energy and Green Building
Fair, comprised of 40 booths celebrating energy conservation and green
building.

The Gregg and Bobbie Strome of John L. Scott Family Harvest Area on
Minnesota Avenue between Wall and Bond streets will feature a wonderful
interactive animal exhibit by the Humane Society, a giant hay maze, a
playhouse built by Adair Homes and a play structure by Mike¹s Fence Center.
Activities will include pony rides, old-fashioned hay rides, pumpkin
painting and carving, apple bobbing and pumpkin boccie (the Italian bowling
game). Many of the activities are free, and some may entail a small fee with
proceeds going to local family/kid-related charities.
Be aware of the street closures that make the festival possible. Wall Street
will be closed from Greenwood to Louisiana avenues, Oregon Avenue will be
closed from Bond to Brooks streets, and Minnesota Avenue will be closed from
Wall Street to Lava Road. Bond Street and Franklin Avenue will remain open.
